Not only was Kennedy young, he inspired the nation’s young people, too, like this crowd that greeted him on the campaign trail in rural Wisconsin and thousands of others who now jumped at the chance to work for the government. “Young people running for office explained that Kennedy had made politics respectable.” wrote historian and Kennedy aide Arthur M. Schlesinger, Jr. “What perhaps they more often meant was that he had made it rational.”
